A Historical Moment

I could go on about this adventure but I won’t. I will be keeping this one on a much more shorter scale. Not because I have so much to say, but because while writing this….the page automatically refreshed and I lost the whole first draft. A blessing in disguise because now I am just going to share three of my favorite photos of the whole day. Starting out with number one, a silhouette of a friend.

Title: In The Moment

My photo club I was apart of in 2023 was invited to Historic McKay Avenue School Archives & Museum to photograph the inside of the building. Our challenge for that Friday was Capture The Beauty of Buildings. Challenge accepted! Done! So here I am following the members of my photo club around, trying to get a different photo that all of them because the issue with putting a bunch of photographers together, we all get the same photo. We want to see what you see and try to capture the same thing. So I made sure to try and not do that. I think I got some pretty good angles and stories within this building by doing so if I say so myself. So here I am in one of the meeting rooms or board rooms of the building with one of my friends at the window. The best part of this photo is my friend was unaware I was taking his photo at the time. I was trying to capture the row of three of the windows but without the subject, they were not as interesting. So I waited for him to walk towards the window and look out, not aware that I was waiting for him to do so. It was in the moment, him enjoying the moment, that made this photo what it is today. So to him I say Thank You for helping make a perfect photo. Thank You!

Title: Gents

Next is…you guessed it, a lavatory but not just any lavatory, a gentleman’s lavatory. Don’t ask me why I went into the mens washroom because truth be told, I don’t quite know myself. I don’t remember what attracted me to it but when I stepped in, it was the window light that took my breath away. That window, that corner, it just gave such a soft gentle glow into the room it felt welcoming. Heck I went all the way to the corner and photographed outward. I could curl up in that corner with Hot Chocolate, a good book, and feel completely at home. It felt like a book nook to me and a cosy one at that.

Title: A Lavatory With A View

You see what I mean? You have the heater, a little ledge, great window light. All you need is a candle and a good book and you’re good to go. I could have photographed this bathroom all day long. If it wasn’t raining outside, I am sure this light would have been a whole different story.

Title: Parliament

On to my final favorite photo of the adventure….well not final but of the series of three. This photo will lead to my all time favorite from the whole day as it is in the Parliament Room where I got my favorite photo. Back in the day, before Canada was officially Canada, we were ruled by the British Government. To this day, we still recognize the royal family in both Provincial and Federal buildings in Canada. That is why there is a Union Jack at the front of the Parliament exhibit. This exhibit was a great source of history and how council, parliament, any government meeting took place back in the day. Gentlemen separated from the women. Politicians and speakers separated from each other but everyone having the right to be there. This was so cool and they even had a stuffed man sitting there as if taking part in a meeting. He was pretty cool but this exhibit was my favorite.

Title: Parliament Is In Session

I had to share the dude. Now to move on to the final photo. Now the favorite photo of all you cannot see in any of these photos but it is in the Parliament Room exhibit. You just have to look up.

Before I share the photo I will share the story. Now everyone goes for the typical and see what is in front of them. Not many…Look Up. You know like in the movie Last Christmas. Ever since watching that movie, by the way my most favorite Christmas movie of all time, I look up. Looking up you see such interesting things. Me? I saw the skylight. So here I am trying to photograph this skylight but I just can’t seem to get it with the lens I had. I needed to be further away. So I flatten myself to the floor, hair spread across the ground, camera to the eye. I…am looking up. Everyone around me, is looking down at me. I got the photo I was looking for. I captured the beauty of buildings in every corner of this building from stairwells, windows, to gents bathrooms, to railings, to a skylight in the ceiling. No one else got that photo and I was so proud of myself for going out of the box. I got the photo, I shared the photo, and have placed in challenges with it. So without further ado…I give you…Skylight. Now that I think of it, I may rename it, Look Up!
